In the Philippines, politics has always been a deeply personal and often divisive topic. Whether during the leadership of Rodrigo Duterte, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., or the current administration of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Filipinos have expressed strong and varied political views. But as Christians, how should we approach politics and government according to the Bible?

1. God’s Sovereignty Over Government

The Bible teaches that God is ultimately in control of all earthly authorities. Romans 13:1 reminds us:
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.”
While governments may rise and fall, God remains sovereign. This calls believers to trust in Him above any political system.

2. Respect for Authorities

Christians are called to respect and pray for their leaders, even when they disagree with them. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 urges believers:
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
This does not mean blind obedience, but it does call for a spirit of humility and intercession.

3. Seeking Justice and Righteousness

The Bible calls God’s people to stand for justice and righteousness, not just personal or party interests. Micah 6:8 says:
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Christians should advocate for policies that align with God’s heart for the poor, the oppressed, and the vulnerable.

4. Our Ultimate Citizenship is in Heaven

While earthly politics can be divisive, Philippians 3:20 reminds believers that:
“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
This means our highest loyalty is to God’s Kingdom, not political ideologies. Christians should engage in politics with love, wisdom, and the understanding that no human system is perfect.

5. Engaging in Politics with Grace and Truth

Jesus never sought political power, yet His teachings challenged unjust systems. As His followers, we are called to be the salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16), engaging in society with grace and truth. Christians should speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and avoid hostility or division over political differences.

Conclusion: A Biblical Approach to Politics

The Bible encourages believers to respect authorities, pursue justice, and keep their hearts fixed on God’s Kingdom. Instead of being consumed by political debates, Christians should focus on living out their faith in a way that honors Christ and advances His love in the world.

At the end of the day, no political leader or system can bring true hope and salvation—only Jesus can. So, while we engage in civic duties, let’s remember to place our trust not in earthly rulers, but in the eternal King of kings.
