Scientists have captured the first-ever image of the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, and surprisingly, it’s not the ravenous destroyer many might expect. Dubbed a “gentle giant,” this black hole, called Sagittarius A*, appears to be on a near-starvation diet, astronomers revealed Thursday.

Using the Event Horizon Telescope, a global network of radio telescopes, researchers were able to capture this breakthrough image despite the challenge of photographing something that absorbs both light and matter. Light bends and distorts as it gets pulled into the black hole, along with gas and dust.

Described as “burbling and gurgling,” the black hole confirmed Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity by being precisely the size his equations predicted. It’s about as large as Mercury’s orbit around the sun and 4 million times more massive than our star.

Unlike more violent black holes, this one is barely eating, drawing comparisons to a person consuming just one grain of rice over millions of years. “We love our black hole,” said University of Arizona’s Feryal Ozel, highlighting its surprisingly calm nature.

This incredible achievement required the synchronization of eight radio telescopes across the globe, with the project costing nearly $60 million. For the scientists, witnessing the black hole at the center of our own galaxy is more than just scientific discovery—it’s a glimpse into the vastness of God’s creation.
