In an unexpected but powerful season of American Idol, faith has taken center stage — not just in lyrics, but in the hearts of contestants and viewers alike.
It started with a viral backstage moment: contestants breaking into worship during one of the most stressful moments of the competition. Thunderstorm Artis, a former Idol contestant, described it as unscripted and Spirit-led. “It just felt like the Spirit of the Lord was in the room,” he shared. “I was shaky, unsure, but I realized — this is exactly where God wants me to be.”
Now in its 23rd season, American Idol is boldly leaning into the presence of faith. This Easter Sunday, ABC is airing a special three-hour “Songs of Faith” episode, featuring gospel and worship performances from the top 20 contestants. The night will also include appearances by judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, and performances from CeCe Winans and worship artists like Brandon Lake and Jelly Roll singing “Hard Fought Hallelujah.”
Underwood herself was moved earlier this season by a duet of Brandon Lake’s “Gratitude” by contestants Breanna Nix and Rylie O’Neill. “It’s a brave thing to bring your faith into this industry,” she said tearfully, supported by Richie beside her. “I’m proud of you.”
Faith hasn’t just been a theme in song — it’s part of the journey of many contestants this year. Victor Solomon shared how putting God first every morning grounds him in the competition. Canaan James Hill, a 17-year-old aspiring preacher, earned a platinum ticket with his powerful audition of “I Need Your Glory.” Baylee Littrell, son of Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell, performed “Hey Jesus,” a song that helped restore his faith after losing his grandmother.
Even behind the scenes, many have been surprised to find a spirit-filled atmosphere in the Idol family. “There’s so many Christians — from production to leadership,” Artis said. “It’s been amazing.”
Simon Lythgoe, original producer of the show, says this marks a bold shift. “When I worked on Idol years ago, we avoided overt faith references. To see ABC and Disney celebrate Jesus on Easter Sunday is powerful. It’s nothing short of inspiring.”
American Idol airs Sunday at 10p.m. on TV5 Manila.
